World number 15 Hubert Hurkacz is not a natural clay-courter but the high altitude in Madrid should enhance some of his best qualities as a powerful server with excellent wingspan. The 26-yar-old did well to reach the round of 16 at the Monte-Carlo Masters earlier this month and he took the first set form Jannik Sinner before defeat to suggest he is ready for the challenge here. World number 43 Richard Gasquet conceded just three games to teenage wildcard Martin Landaluce on Wednesday but he has so far struggled on clay and arguably ever since claiming his 16th ATP title at the Auckland Classic back in January. Hurkacz beat Gasquet in straight sets in their only previous encounter in Dubai back in 2021 but the playing field will be levelled out a bit on clay, on which Gasquet can excel, and all four of the Pole’s matches on this surface have gone to three sets so far. Back Hurkacz to win outright and consider adding at least a tiebreak here as he has played six amongst his last 12 sets on clay.
