27-year-old Hubert Hurkacz moved up to a career-high ATP world ranking of eighth after claiming his first ever title on clay, beating Pedro Martinez in the Estoril Open final on Sunday. The Pole enjoyed a kind draw throughout his stay in Estoril but, having excelled on grass and hardcourts, this makes for an interesting narrative over the coming months on his supposed weakest surface.
22-year-old Jack Draper set a career-high ATP world ranking of 37th after an excellent run to the semi-finals of the Mexican Open early last month but he struggled to make a dent across the Sunshine Double. The Brit has next to no experience on clay, relatively, but he found some strong results on the surface this time last season – beating Sebastian Baez and Miomir Kecmanovic – to suggest this is no gimme for Hurkacz. The pair met in the second round here last season, with Hurkacz squeaking through in three sets, but Draper won their most recent encounter in three at the US Open later last summer to pose a considerable threat.
