Dayeon Back produced one of the biggest wins of her season to reach the next round in Seoul, upsetting Yue Yuan 6-3 4-6 6-1. The Korean wildcard recovered superbly after dropping the second set, dominating the decider and breaking Yuan three times. Back won seven of her 16 break point opportunities across the match and claimed 55% of the points on Yuan’s first serve. She has won three lower-level titles in 2026.

Maya Joint survived an enormous scare against qualifier Xinxin Yao in the opening round. The fifth seed trailed 6-2 5-1 and faced three match points before staging a remarkable comeback to win 2-6 7-6 (7) 6-3 in two hours and 44 minutes. It was Joint’s first match since the US Open, which ended at the second-round stage after a three set loss to Elina Svitolina. Her ranking has fallen to 68 after a difficult campaign in terms of results.

Back has the home support, but Joint represents a significant rise in opposition. However, the Australian will have to make a better start this time around.
