Kamilla Rakhimova had to work extremely hard to reach the second-round in Seoul, eventually overcoming Polina Kudermetova in three sets. The eighth seed was pushed throughout a tight contest but found a way through the deciding set to win 7-6 (4) 4-6 7-5. She also advanced to the third-round of the US Open earlier this month and now has three wins from her last four matches. 

Katie Volynets made a far more straightforward start to her Korea Open campaign, beating Elvina Kalieva 6-3 6-0. The American dropped only three games and has now won six of her last seven matches, with her only defeat during that sequence coming against Linda Noskova at the US Open. Volynets’ standout achievement came immediately before New York, when she captured the WTA 125 title in Philadelphia. 

There is just one place separating the pair in the world rankings, and both players have been winning consistently in recent times. However, Volynets was more convincing in her opening round match.
