Alina Korneeva made an assured start to her Korea Open campaign, beating Mananchaya Sawangkaew in straight sets. The 19-year-old required just an hour and 23 minutes to win 6-4 6-2. She was effective when it came to taking opportunities, and that result continued an impressive hard court spell which included victories over Emma Navarro and Iva Jovic during her run to the round-of-16 in Toronto. Korneeva is at a career high of 81 in the world.

Darya Astakhova produced one of the biggest victories of her career in the first-round, upsetting seventh seed Magda Linette in three sets. Astakhova went behind but dominated the second set and held her nerve in the deciding tiebreak to win 3-6 6-1 7-6 (2). She has now won three matches in Seoul, after also qualifying for the tournament. 

Korneeva has produced stronger results against higher-ranked opponents, and she will be expected to win this.
