World number 54 J.J. Wolf did well to beat lucky loser Hugo Grenier in straight sets on Thursday after Quentin Halys was forced to withdraw from the Italian Open. 24-year-old Wolf came into form on the indoor hardcourt swing late last season, finishing runner-up in his first tour final to Felix Auger-Aliassime at the Firenze Open, and he took that level straight into the new season with a career-best run to the round of 16 at the Australian Open. The American has largely struggled since transitioning to the clay swing but this is certainly not world number 15 Hubert Hurkacz’s desired choice of surface either. The 26-year-old has seen four of his five matches on clay go to three sets as he continues to struggle closing out and a first meeting with Wolf looks pretty open. Back Hurkacz to earn at least a set here or consider taking just a tiebreak in the match with at least one in each of his five clay matches so far this swing.
