THE PREDICTION

World number 14 Hubert Hurkacz is in his element on grass as a former Wimbledon semi-finalist and last season’s Halle Open champion but the Pole survived an early scare on Wednesday, coming back from a set down to beat qualifier Yosuke Watanuki. The 26-year-old’s powerful serve and world class net presence gives him plenty of options in these conditions but he will have to improve considerably if he is to make a proper dent in Stuttgart, particularly as 29-year-old Christopher O’Connell is in fine form. The Aussie will break the top 70 on tour for the first time after stunning Lorenzo Sonego on Wednesday but despite enjoying the best season of his career by far he is yet to beat a top 20 foe in 2023. Back Hurkacz to win outright here but the shrewd move could be taking O’Connell to earn at least a set.
