Former world number six Gael Monfils meets current world number six Holger Rune for the first time here and what a match this could be if the Frenchman were 10 years younger. The 36-year-old produced a stunning fightback from 0-4 down in the fifth set to beat a top clay-courter in Sebastian Baez late on Tuesday night amidst rapturous scenes on Philippe-Chatrier but it is difficult to see him recovering in time to make a match of this second round clash. Monfils only recently returned to tour from a hiatus following the birth of his first child and it is well worth holding off selecting this match for anything until he walks back onto Philippe-Chatrier on Thursday evening as there is a significant chance that he is forced to withdraw after some serious cramping in the first round.
20-year-old Rune is no stranger to cramping right now as his body struggles to keep up with his electrifying tennis. The Dane’s issues with closing out matches late on at top tournaments is the only thing keeping him from being a clear title contender here in Paris but he should have more than enough energy to outlast any early storms from Monfils here in a potential thriller but likelier three-setter. It could be wisest to leave this match alone altogether but otherwise back Rune to win in straight sets.
