THE PREDICTION
Top seed Holger Rune began his Munich Open title defence strongly with a straight-sets victory over Yannick Hanfmann as he cast aside last weekend’s crushing defeat to Andrey Rublev in the final of the Monte-Carlo Open. The 19-year-old set a new career-high ATP world ranking of seventh this week as a result of his excellent campaign last week and he looks a creditable threat to every clay-court tournament he enters over the next few months. Former world number 17 Cristian Garin is a tough competitor in these conditions, though, and the Chilean is yet to drop a set this week after a strong straight-sets victory over Lorenzo Sonego on Thursday. The 26-year-old looks set to drag himself away from the latter stages of the top 100 soon after several seasons in the wilderness but in-form Rune should be too steep of a test. The Dane beat Garin in straight sets twice last season and he can do so again here, although the outright option may be best for an accumulator.
