World number seven Holger Rune beat world number one Novak Djokovic in three sets at a Masters event for the second time in six months to take a 2-1 lead in their head-to-head record. The 20-year-old stunned the Serb from a set down to win his first Masters title in Paris last November but his victory this time around was no shock at all in conditions that suit him as clear and present Roland-Garros contender. World number four finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal at Roland-Garros last summer, one of two Grand Slam finals he reached in 2022, but he looks to have been usurped by Rune as the next-best on the surface. 24-year-old Ruud beat Francisco Cerundolo in straight sets on Wednesday to continue a strong campaign in Rome but Rune will be the Norwegian’s first elite test, especially as the crowd will probably switch sides throughout this encounter.
