THE PREDICTION

World number four Casper Ruud and number six Holger Rune met at this exact stage at Roland-Garros last summer for an exciting all-Scandinavian clash that Ruud edged through in four. 24-year-old Ruud came through a significant test against in-form clay specialist Nicolas Jarry on Monday, to whom he had lost just two weeks ago in Geneva, as he continues to improve on his favoured surface. Ruud leads Rune 4-1 in their head-to-head record but the 20-year-old Dane claimed his first victory in the semi-finals at the Italian Open late last month to turn a tide. Rune won his first ever five-set match on Monday to pass a real test at this level and whilst he may struggle to recover well as his body continues to adapt to the rigours of top 10 life he will meet an inferior version of the player who beat him this time last year. Rune has improved since their last quarter-final here and Ruud has regressed, this season at least. Back the Dane to win outright in a match likely to see four or even five sets. Ruud has a better chance of winning this match the longer it takes.
