THE LOWDOWN

World number eight Holger Rune ended 2022 as the shock Paris Masters champion after stunning Novak Djokovic from a set down in the final but he struggled to match that level in 2023. The 20-year-old will feel hugely left out of the current conversation swirling around Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner but he is very much a contemporary of the two with a blistering game that currently seems to ask too much of his body. Rune added Roger Federer’s former coach Severin Luthi to his coaching team for 2024, forming a super group of Grand Slam kingmakers alongside Novak Djokovic’s ex-coach Boris Becker, to make a huge statement of intent at such a young age. It may take some time for the team to gel, if at all, but getting Rune to trust his body is the first step towards becoming a genuine challenger at Grand Slams in the near future.

THE PREDICTION

The Dane came back from a set down to beat Max Purcell on Monday but he should be better for an early scare as the top seed here in Brisbane. 23-year-old Alexander Shevchenko brought a career-high ATP world ranking of 48th into 2024 after enjoying an excellent breakthrough last year and he conceded just five games to Luca Van Assche on Sunday to look a serious threat to Rune in their first encounter. The Russian ended last season as a runner-up to Ugo Humbert at the Moselle Open, in his first tour final, but this looks too steep of a test at this moment in time. Back Rune to win outright.

TIP: HOLGER RUNE TO WIN
