Both world number 195 Heather Watson and number 150 Viktorija Golubic set career-high WTA rankings inside the top 40 in recent seasons and both look to be recovering from a poor past 12 months here in Nottingham. 31-year-old Watson should be ranked far higher given her run to the round of 16 at Wimbledon last July, where ranking points were controversially denied, but she has avenged her loss to Jule Niemeier at SW19 and now beaten Niemeier’s vanquisher, Tatjana Maria, without dropping a set. 30-year-old Golubic has endured a very poor season so far but back-to-back straight-set victories over Jil Teichmann and former champion Donna Vekic suggest she has exorcized a mental demon on her favoured grass this week and the Swiss beat Watson in straight-sets here last summer to take a 2-0 lead in their head-to-head record, both meetings coming on grass. Back Golubic to earn at least a set with the crowd firmly behind Watson and leave the winner up to chance.
