THE PREDICTION
27-year-old Barbora Krejcikova moved back up to world number 10 this week after finishing runner-up to Jelena Ostapenko at the Birmingham Classic last Sunday. The Czech is the reigning Women’s Doubles champion here alongside Katerina Siniakova but she made the jump from seasoned doubles pro to decorated singles player in 2021 with an incredible run to the Roland-Garros title. Krejcikova added her first Masters trophy to her now six career WTA titles earlier this season and it is fair to say that her excellent game is strong on all surfaces.
This is still a tricky draw for the Czech, though, as world number 149 Heather Watson will be backed to the hilt as a popular home favourite at Wimbledon and the 31-year-old paid some of that back last summer with a superb run to the round of 16. Watson would be ranked inside the top 100 had her points been awarded for that run but she repaired some of the damage to her ranking with a strong run to the semi-finals in Nottingham last month and she is highly experienced both on the surface and at this most prestigious of events. Back Krejcikova to win outright all the same, with two sets probably the reasonable call, but consider leaving this match out of an accumulator.
