16-year-old Lya Fernandez was awarded a wildcard to make her WTA tour debut on Sunday and she will be backed by a partisan crowd as a youngster touted for a big future. Some recent deep runs on the ITF circuit give her the groundwork to enjoy the occasion here but world number 169 Hailey Baptiste should be far too strong to suffer an upset. 21-year-old Baptiste brings little recent form into the first round of the Guadalajara Masters but she did stun former world number one Karolina Pliskova in three sets at the Washington Open last month before defeat to eventual champion Coco Gauff.
