World number 40 Matteo Berrettini came into Wimbledon with no form to speak of and some serious questions about his fitness but the Italian blossomed on his favoured grass, stunning Alex de Minaur and Alexander Zverev before a four-set defeat to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz. The former world number six remains an anomaly on tour whilst we ascertain what sort of level he can reach and, more importantly, maintain over the coming months but if he is able to produce what eh did in SW19 he is the clear favourite in this first meeting. World number 59 Gregoire Barrere has enjoyed a career-best season so far with some huge upsets over the likes of Karen Khachanov and Cam Norrie but he has struggled a little since his run to the semi-finals of the Eastbourne International in June.
