World number 17 Jelena Ostapenko won the Birmingham Classic last week with an assured performance over Barbora Krejcikova, her sixth WTA title overall and a second on grass. The 26-year-old reached the semi-finals here in 2018 one year after her remarkable maiden Grand Slam title at Roland-Garros and she has made the round of 16 here on three occasions – twice more than at any other Grand Slam. World number 121 Greet Minnen qualified without dropping a set this week to make a third-successive appearance at Wimbledon but she has drawn one of the shortest straws in the competition. Ostapenko’s withdrawal from the quarter-finals in Eastbourne this week were likely just a precaution, or perhaps even a lack of interest after success in Birmingham, but the Latvian can be backed to start strong here with a straight-sets win.
