THE PREDICTION
World number six Stefanos Tsitsipas lost his first match of the new season in three sets to Nicolas Jarry to suggest his intermittent, frustrating 2023 form is not yet behind him. The 25-year-old combined reasonably well with Maria Sakkari in the doubles, after Sakkari blasted through her singles match to give Greece some hope, but the pair ultimately fell short to lose a very winnable tie 1-2. Tsitsipas will be desperate to make amends in this crucial clash and he has been handed a kind fixture to do so against Canada’s Steven Diez, who has been somewhat thrown to the lions after Felix Auger-Aliassime pulled out of the tournament through injury. 32-year-old Diez handled the occasion well against Nicolas Jarry on Sunday but the gulf in class was apparent in a straight-sets defeat, although he partnered well with Leylah Fernandez to see Canada claim a huge 2-1 victory in Auger-Aliassime’s absence.
This tie will be all about Fernandez again as she takes on Sakkari in the vital clash after this opener, with even an out-of-sorts Tsitsipas capable of blasting through this match in straight sets.
TIP: STEFANOS TSITSIPAS TO WIN 2-0
