THE PREDICTION
Great Britain captain Leon Smith saw his trust in 21-year-old Jack Draper rewarded in spades as he came back from a set down to beat Thanasi Kokkinakis in just over three hours on court, setting the tone of the day for the hosts. British number two Dan Evans proved to be the right call as first option, replacing an out-of-sorts Cam Norrie, when he dismantled Alex de Minaur in their first set and then recovered well from a lapse to claim his third-best win this year over the world number 12 amidst raucous scenes in Manchester. A 2-1 win over Australia, with the Aussies saving some face in the doubles, is a job well done in a tough Group B and Leon Smith still has former world number one Andy Murray, and current British number one Cam Norrie, at his disposal.
Switzerland will be disappointed with their start in Group B, particularly first option Stan Wawrinka who struggled to find anything like his best tennis against the deceptively good Ugo Humbert. A 3-0 defeat to France looks to have handed them an already unassailable climb to escape this stacked group but second option Dominic Stricker looked hungry in a three-set defeat to Adrian Mannarino and Wawrinka should be able to improve on his efforts from Tuesday with three days’ rest. Wawrinka and Marc-Andrea Huesler looks a little bereft of ideas as a doubles partnership against seasoned professionals but the Swiss are severely lacking in that department, something that looks set to see them miss out on all three ties.
This looks a very interesting tie on match-ups with Jack Draper and Dominic Stricker, both 21, set to face off almost a year on from their first encounter at the Next Gen ATP Finals. Stricker caused a small upset by winning in straight sets that day but Draper’s level was exceptional on Wednesday and he can count on an even bigger support in Manchester on Friday, although Leon Smith may well demote Dan Evans to face the youngster in his stead. It seems likely that Evans will at least not play as first option against Wawrinka as he trails the heavyweight Swiss 0-5 in their head-to-head, with third option Andy Murray the clear choice in match-ups with a 13-9 lead over his old foe. World number 17 Cam Norrie could well be the surprise man up as outright first option in rankings but the 28-year-old has endured a tough summer to bring very little confidence into a first meeting with the former world number three.
Assuming Draper is backed to go out again to face fellow youngster Stricker, and assuming that he edges through that tough test in three sets to take Great Britain 1-0 up, the hosts can be backed to win the tie with a huge set of advantages in a potential doubles decider. Stan Wawrinka has a lot to offer in this tie but Norrie could well match-up well against a fellow left-hander, as could Murray backed by 10,000+ home fans, to make this a thriller on Friday.
