THE PREDICTION

27-year-old Zhizhen Zhang conceded just two games to an ailing Lorenzo Musetti on Monday and he looks set to break his current career-high ATP world ranking of 47th no matter the outcome here. The Chinese burst into form around 10 months ago with an insatiable run to the quarter-finals of the Madrid Masters and he went on to win Gold at the Asian Games amidst a strong hardcourt swing to look ready to enjoy an even better season in 2024.

Former world number six Gael Monfils also enjoyed an excellent hardcourt swing late last year, returning from a long injury lay-off to produce some of his best performances in years in Cincinnati, Toronto, and en-route to a 12th ATP title at the Stockholm Open. The 37-year-old veteran took eventual Rotterdam champion Jannik Sinner to three sets last week and a straight-sets victory over Botic van de Zandschulp on Tuesday here in Doha says he is ready to be a factor this week. Zhang is a fierce competitor well capable of winning this first encounter between the two but back Monfils to earn at least a set as the just-about likelier to squeak through.
