THE PREDICTION
World number two Novak Djokovic looked in good shape in his first match back on tour since losing that Wimbledon final classic to Carlos Alcaraz in five sets a month ago. The 36-year-old took the first set from Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Wednesday before the Spaniard was forced to retire in the second with a back injury but Djokovic will be content with his start on hardcourts. This looks a kind next fixture for the two-time former Cincinnati champion as he faces old foe Gael Monfils for a 19th time, leading the Frenchman a staggering 18-0 in their head-to-head. Former world number six Monfils, also 36, stands a better chance than usual against Djokovic after the Serb’s month off but despite some incredible results over the likes of Stefanos Tsitsipas, Cam Norrie and Alex de Minaur in recent weeks it is hard to back anything other than a comfortable win for the second seed. Half of their 18 matches have seen sets go both ways but five of their last eight have gone in two for Djokovic, so take the Serb to win outright inside an accumulator or risk the straight sets on its own.
