THE PREDICTION
World number eight Andrey Rublev avoided a tough opener with Emil Ruusuvuori, who had just beaten him in Cincinnati, when the Finn pulled out of their first round fixture and he coped well with the sudden change to beat lucky loser Arthur Cazaux in straight sets. The 25-year-old reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon in June to complete a full house of last eights at Grand Slams, eight of them in total with three of them coming here in New York in 2017, 2020 and last summer. Former world number six Gael Monfils went one better here in 2016 to match his best Grand Slam exit at Roland-Garros in 2008 but the veteran only recently reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open last season to prove what he can still do when fit. The 36-year-old had pondered retirement this summer after struggling on his latest return from injury but a huge run to the quarter-finals of the Canada Masters and then the round of 16 in Cincinnati saw him come into New York with a resolved confidence.
Monfils came back from a set down to beat a tricky opener in Taro Daniel on Tuesday and he has stunned the likes of Cam Norrie, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alex de Minaur in August to look very competitive here. Rublev should ultimately have too much for the popular Frenchman over five sets but expect sets to go both ways here. Tale the Russian to win outright.
