21-year-old Gabriel Diallo made full use of his wildcard in Toronto to beat Washington Open champion Dan Evans in straight sets. The Canadian will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 133rd for his efforts but he looks set to struggle here against world number 18 Alex de Minaur, who beat 11th seed Cam Norrie in straight sets to look dialled in. The 24-year-old’s win is extra impressive after finishing runner-up to Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Los Cabos Open last weekend, with Mexico a particularly tough place to play tennis, and he tends to perform well against players ranked below him. Diallo will enjoy a partisan atmosphere on his home court but De Minaur’s rock-solid defence should be too tight to find much joy. Take De Minaur to win in straight sets.
