World number eight Taylor Fritz came back from a set down against Arthur Rinderknech on Thursday evening and played up to the pantomime villain whilst doing so. The 25-year-old is usually one of the more reserved players on tour but he seemed to revel in the ire of Court Suzanne Lenglen after knocking out France’s last hope at Roland-Garros and that should mean that the American is feeling his level here. World number 23 Francisco Cerundolo put in an excellent performance against Yannick Hanfmann on Thursday to maintain some excellent form on his favoured clay. Wins over the likes of Jannik Sinner, Casper Ruud and Cam Norrie on clay in recent works suggest the Argentine will need top opposition to oust him in Paris but Fritz is an excellent all-courter with something to prove after his antics. The conditions favour Cerundolo, as will the crowd, in this first meeting but back Fritz to earn at least two sets as the likelier of two very capable winners.
