THE PREDICTION

World number 22 Francisco Cerundolo received a bye to the round of 16 at the Cordoba Open as the top seed this week but the Argentine could probably have done with the extra round’s practice after a woeful start to 2024. The 25-year-old has enjoyed steady progress on tour since making his breakthrough two years ago but he was forced to retire from his Davis Cup qualifier last week to make it 2-4 for the season so far and it took him five sets to squeak past wildcard Dane Sweeny at the Australian Open.

World number 74 Jaume Munar beat Daniel Elahi Galan in straight sets on Monday to bring some momentum into this clash and he impressed in Melbourne, beating in-form Alexander Shevchenko in straight sets before a five-set exit to Adrian Mannarino. The Spaniard is capable of much better tennis than his current ranking suggests but Cerundolo should be able to draw enough strength from a raucous home crowd to fix his poor form here. Cerundolo leads their head-to-head 2-0 at tour-level but a four-set win at Roland-Garros is proof that this could come close. Back the Argentine to win outright or consider a one-off on this match to need a decider.

TIP: FRANCISCO CERUNDOLO TO WIN
