THE PREDICTION

World number eight Jannik Sinner was tested well by up-and-coming Alexander Shevchenko on Sunday but the three-set result saw two reasonably one-sided sets in the Italian’s favour. 21-year-old Sinner clearly enjoys representing his country here in Rome and he will be backed to the hilt with a partisan atmosphere as Italy’s best chance at a first home champion since 1976. Carlos Alcaraz’ shock defeat on Monday makes that especially possible here, particularly as Novak Djokovic is not yet fully up to speed, and it is unlikely that Sinner puts a foot wrong moving forwards with this opportunity in his sights. That means it should take a top 10 player to overcome the eighth seed and whilst world number 31 Francisco Cerundolo has done well to come back from sets down in each of his two matches here his results suggest there are vulnerabilities to exploit. Back Sinner to enjoy the day with a straight sets victory. The Italian leads their head-to-head 2-1 but Cerundolo’s win at the Miami Open last March came via an injury.
