Both world number 26 Dan Evans and number 32 Francisco Cerundolo provided brilliant upsets on Thursday, with Evans stunning Karen Khachanov and Cerundolo ousting Casper Ruud in straight sets apiece. 32-year-old Evans has shown signs of improvement in recent tournaments after a poor start to 2023 and, just as he did against Khachanov, he holds a positive record over Francisco Cerundolo after beating the Argentine – on clay – at Roland-Garros last summer. 24-year-old Cerundolo is by far the more comfortable clay-courter but Evans has worked hard on his game in these conditions in recent seasons and it would be foolish to judge this quarter-final on that alone. Evans has saved all 15 break points he has faced this week to suggest he is seriously dialled-in but Cerundolo has the better recent results on clay overall. Consider taking this match to see three sets as a one-off or back Evans to earn at least a set given his imperious week so far.
