THE PREDICTION
World number 29 Francisco Cerundolo beat fellow Argentine Guido Pella in straight sets on Monday for a relieving first win since late October. The 24-year-old burst onto the scene early last season with a remarkable run to the semi-finals of the Miami Open and he went on to enjoy an excellent summer on clay, winning his maiden ATP title at the Bastad Open before a sever depreciation once tennis returned to hardcourts. This first meeting with world number 62 Corentin Moutet looks a potential thriller on Wednesday after the Frenchman battled through five sets to beat Yibing Wu. Moutet is probably also at his most comfortable on the clay but, like Cerundolo, he enjoyed an excellent hardcourt campaign to reach the round of 16 at the US Open with victories over former champion Stan Wawrinka and 21st seed Botic van de Zandschulp that changed some preconceptions of his potential.
This is tricky to call given Cerundolo’s poor recent form but a comprehensive victory on Monday should boost his confidence. Back the Argentine to earn at least two sets and leave the victor up to chance.
