World number 22 Francisco Cerundolo snapped a concerning three-match losing streak in three choppy sets on Monday but he will be relieved to have done so after an awful start to 2024. The 25-year-old should be better for a confidence-boosting opener and he faces another player in dire need of some form on tour, with clay veteran Albert Ramos-Vinolas currently far from the player that dominated the South American swings in recent seasons. The 36-year-old came back from a set down to beat Juan Pablo Varillas on Monday to get a foothold in at the Rio Open but he may have come one match too late to take full advantage of Cerundolo’s poor start. Cerundolo beat Ramos-Vinolas in three tight sets three years ago in Buenos Aires and he can be backed to edge this encounter too – although this match is best left far from an accumulator.
