THE PREDICTION
25-year-old Frances Tiafoe set a career-high ATP world ranking of 10th two weeks ago after winning his third ATP title at the Stuttgart Open, completing the set on surfaces after also winning the Houston Open on clay back in April. The American changed the course of his career with a superb run to the semi-finals of the US Open last summer where he came closer than anyone to ousting Carlos Alcaraz in a five-set thriller before falling to the eventual champion. Tiafoe’s best run at Wimbledon ended in the round of 16 last summer in a five set defeat to David Goffin but he stands an excellent chance of beating that this fortnight with the right draw.
World number 59 Yibing Wu won his first ATP title at the Dallas Open in February and after a difficult few months on clay the Chinese looks to be enjoying tennis on grass. The 23-year-old beat Nick Kyrgios at the Stuttgart Open two weeks ago, no mean feat even if the Aussie was clearly rusty, and he took Halle Open finalist Andrey Rublev to three sets last week before defeat. Tiafoe used to be the sort of player who was as likely to crash out early against someone he should beat than to stun the likes of Stefanos Tsitsipas here in 2021 but the new top 10 version of the American knows what his chances are here this summer. Back Tiafoe to win outright here with four sets about as likely as three against a good player in Wu.
