World number 10 Frances Tiafoe suffered an early exit to a resurgent Milos Raonic at the Canada Masters last week, taking the first set tiebreak 14-12 before losing the next two. The 25-year-old is approaching the anniversary of the best run of his career to the semi-finals of the last summer’s US Open, where he took eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz closer than anyone before defeat in five sets, and whilst he should perform well in New York regardless he will be desperate to produce a better run this week than last. 27-year-old Tallon Griekspoor also suffered an early exit in Toronto but the Dutchman was likely still fixated on his Washington Open final defeat to Dan Evans the previous weekend. Griekspoor set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 26th for his efforts in Washington, backing up his first two titles won this year in Pune and on home grass at ‘s-Hertogenbosch. A first meeting between the two could end up a thriller if Griekspoor can find his recent level but back Tiafoe to find a way through in front of an adoring home crowd.
