THE LOWDOWN

World number 16 Frances Tiafoe reached the semi-finals of the US Open in 2022, taking eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz all the way in a five-set thriller, but he has struggled to find that highest gear practically ever since. The 25-year-old did manage to pick up two ATP titles last season in Houston and Stuttgart but is striving for better, parting company with coach Wayne Ferreira at the start of this season in an attempt to freshen things up. This is a tough bye to the round of 16 for the American as he faces former world number Miomir Kecmanovic in his first tour-level match since defeat to Alexander Bublik in the first round of the Paris Masters in October. 24-year-old Kecmanovic, currently ranked way below his potential at 54th, will be hoping for a better season after a pretty drab 2023. The Serb was mightily impressive the year before, himself making several coaching changes in recent seasons, but it remains to be seen if he can find his way back inside the top 30.

THE PREDICTION

Kecmanovic beat Taro Daniel handily on Tuesday to get his eye in at the Hong Kong Open and that could prove the difference in this clash with Tiafoe, although the American leads their head-to-head 3-0 having yet to concede a set to the Serb. Back Tiafoe to earn at least a set here given his record but if forced to pick a winner here this feels like Kecmanovic’s best chance yet at getting a point on the board.

TIP: FRANCES TIAFOE TO WIN A SET
