THE PREDICTION
This could end up the match of the day if former world number three Grigor Dimitrov brings his best level to face world number 10 Frances Tiafoe. 32-year-old Dimitrov came into Wimbledon at world number 24 after a recent upturn in form and he reached the semi-finals here nine years ago to become the next big thing, however briefly, behind the Big Four. Comfortable straight-set wins over Sho Shimabukuro and Ilya Ivashka say the Bulgarian will be competitive here but 25-year-old Tiafoe is certainly his biggest challenge yet, with the American claiming his first grass-court ATP title at the Stuttgart Open last month. Tiafoe is also through the third round without dropping a set after two fierce battles with Yibing Wu and Dominic Stricker. The American changed his perception of what is possible for his career last summer with a huge run to the semi-finals at the US Open, coming closer than anyone to beating Carlos Alcaraz in a five-set defeat, and he will be desperate to beat his best record here after exiting to David Goffin in five in the round of 16 last season.
Dimitrov leads their head-to-head record 2-1 but the pair have not net since Tiafoe’s breakthrough run at the Australian Open in 2019, where he beat the Bulgarian in four-sets to reach the quarter-finals. Back a much-improved, more mature version of the same popular showman to level things with an outright win here with four sets or even five likelier than three.
