THE PREDICTION
25-year-old Frances Tiafoe came into Wimbledon at a career-high ATP world ranking of 10th and full of confidence that he can contend for the title this fortnight. The American found a new gear at the US Open last summer in a huge, career-changing run to the semi-finals of the US Open before a five-set defeat to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz that has given him a new perspective on what is possible. A straight-sets victory over Yibing Wu on Wednesday was an excellent start to his campaign and he will receive a large support on Court 12 as one of the blockbusters on a totally stacked Day 4 at SW19. World number 117 Dominic Stricker is certainly an up-and-comer of note at 20 years old but a five-set victory over Alexei Popyrin on Wednesday should see him a little tired this soon after. The Swiss has the game to break the top 30 at least one day but this first meeting with Tiafoe, who recently claimed a first grass title in Stuttgart, looks too steep a challenge right now. The sensible call is Tiafoe to win outright, though, given Stricker’s grit in round one.
