THE PREDICTION

World number 14 Frances Tiafoe received a bye to the round of 16 as the top seed this week in Dallas and he will be desperate for a significant run after struggling in recent months. The 26-year-old reached the semi-finals of the US Open in 2022, coming closer than anyone to ousting Carlos Alcaraz in a thrilling five-set defeat, but despite picking up two ATP titles last year he has arguably fallen back a fair bit from his peak. A straight-sets defeat to Tomas Machac in the second round of the Australian Open last time out was symptomatic of his current inconsistency, with back-to-back wins picked up just thrice since the start of the hardcourt swing last August, and 19-year-old Alex Michelsen is a considerable threat here after an impressive run to the third round on his Melbourne debut.

A first meeting between the two should be going Tiafoe’s way in two but there is real potential for an upset given his recent results. The suitably cautious pick is taking Tiafoe to win a set, with Michelsen to do the same the potentially shrewd way to avoid a full result.

TIP: ALEX MICHELSEN TO WIN A SET
