THE PREDICTION
Former world number one Angelique Kerber and former number two Alexander Zverev made for an unlikely duo on Saturday but they conceded just three games to Italy to look a creditable threat to more seasoned teams. It makes sense, on paper, with Kerber’s uber-defence and Zverev’s incredible serve combining well in a mixed doubles format but France can call upon doubles number 13 Edouard Roger-Vasselin, who came so close to reaching the Davis Cup Finals last summer, and two-time Roland-Garros women’s doubles champion Caroline Garcia to form a hugely experienced response. With Zverev more than likely to win his opening match against Adrian Mannarino this could all be trivial if Kerber can produce a shock victory over Garcia but if the tie is live in time for the doubles consider taking this seasoned French pair to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable victors.
