Former world number eight Felix Auger-Aliassime beat Quentin Halys in straight sets on Wednesday to continue his latest attempt to regain some semblance of the uber-consistency, especially in these conditions, that saw him take 2022 by storm. The 23-year-old won each of his first four ATP titles on indoor hardcourts two years ago and he saved 2023 from a total washout by defending his Basel title to bring a total of five into the new year. 27-year-old Zhizhen Zhang set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 50th after some strong work at the United Cup at the start of this year and he could have gone further than the second round in Melbourne had he not come up against in-form Hubert Hurkacz. The Chinese number one looks ready for more after an excellent breakthrough last year but a three-set victory over lucky loser Giulio Zeppieri on Tuesday suggests Auger-Aliassime may have too much experience in these conditions to lose. Leave this tough call out of an accumulator but otherwise back the Canadian to squeak through.
