41-year-old Feliciano Lopez extended his career by one more match on Tuesday with a straight-sets victory over Max Purcell. The former world number 12 is set to retire this week on home soil in Mallorca and he will receive a hero’s welcome on Centre Court to inspire another top performance from a player who can still be a force on grass, with four of his seven career titles coming on the surface from Eastbourne, in 2013 and 2014, and Queen’s in 2017 and 2019. World number 71 Jordan Thompson is enjoying some excellent form on grass this month but the Aussie faces an unenviable task here that would heap pressure on most players. A straight-sets victory over Richard Gasquet on Monday was a solid way to start in Mallorca and he leads Lopez 3-0 in their head-to-head to suggest this is his match to lose but there is too much nagging doubt here. Leave this match to the emotions of the day but Lopez should squeak through on the crest of the crowd’s wave.
