Former world number nine Fabio Fognini is enduring perhaps the worst season of his long career with a poor 2-9 record coming into the Madrid Masters. The 35-year-old claimed his only ATP 1000 title in Monte-Carlo back in 2019 but he has failed to win a title since, at least in singles, with recent success on the surface alongside Simone Bolelli. It is hard to find a backable winner from this first round fixture as world number 98 Oscar Otte comes in from a three-set defeat to Flavio Cobolli last week in Munich, although he did grab a strong result over Sebastian Baez before that. The high altitude favours the German’s deceptively potent serve but Fognini is something of a cult hero in these conditions and backing the Italian to earn at least a set is probably the sensible way to avoid siding with anyone here.
