THE PREDICTION
This looks like the match of the day on the ATP side of the draw between world number seven Holger Rune and former number nine Fabio Fognini. Expect plenty of aggro and a fiercer-than-usual partisan atmosphere as the Rome crowd back their favoured son to the hilt against Rune, who is quickly earning himself an infamous reputation as the pantomime villain on court. 20-year-old Rune is one of the best clay-courters on tour right now, with last year’s run to the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros still fresh in the memory, but a defeat to home favourite Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in Madrid two weeks ago does suggest that an upset is possible here. 35-year-old Fognini has been far from his best for much of the past three seasons but wins over Andy Murray and Miomir Kecmanovic this week so far are hugely impressive. The current world number 103 will know to push as many of the Dane’s buttons as possible here to get the crowd on his opponents’ back but this should, realistically, be too steep of a challenge. The suitably cautious move is taking Rune to earn at least a set if including in an accumulator but otherwise take the seventh seed to win.
