THE PREDICTION
This promises to be a thrilling ninth encounter between former world number one Andy Murray and former number nine Fabio Fognini, both 35 years old. The pair share a fascinating and finely poised head-to-head record at 4-4 after Fognini ousted him from the third round of the Shanghai Open back in 2019 but the Italian also beat him here in Rome six years ago in the period that it started becoming clear that something was seriously hampering Murray’s game. Murray won the Aix-Provence Challenger last week to move up to world number 42, his highest ranking since the hip resurfacing surgery that saved his career, and it will be interesting to see how well he can transfer that form over to Rome as a former champion here in 2016. Fognini has struggled on tour for some time but a wildcard offers him the chance to entertain what should be a partisan following here in Rome for, perhaps, one last time. The Italian leads their head-to-head 2-1 on clay but it is hard to see Murray lose over three sets to this particularly version of Fognini. Back the Brit win outright with the confidence of five-straight wins behind him.
