World number 17 Karen Khachanov received a bye to the round of 16 here in Doha as the second seed but he is coming off a bruising defeat to Grigor Dimitrov in the semi-finals of the Marseille Open two weeks ago. The 27-year-old looked strong in Marseille but defeat to Dimitrov from a set up suggests there is some fragility in his game right now, as does his surprise defeat to Emil Ruusuvuori at the start of the season. World number 60 Fabian Marozsan is no stranger to causing an upset, with that memorable victory over Carlos Alcaraz at the Italian Open last spring setting the standard for an excellent breakthrough season. The 24-year-old beat Vit Kopriva in straight sets on Monday to get a foothold in the draw but he will have to improve to beat the usually dependable Khachanov in this first encounter between the two. There is a nagging doubt about this match that makes taking the Russian to earn at least a set the suitably cautious move.
