Former world number 10 Emma Raducanu received a wildcard to the main draw at Indian Wells after a 2023 season plagued by injuries and resultant surgeries sees her bring a ranking of 250th to the desert. The 21-year-old has shown flashes of her brilliant best in matches this season, particularly against Shelby Rogers at the Australian Open and in her three-set defeat to Elina Svitolina in Auckland, but she brings a 3-4 record into the tournament with much improvement needed if she is to emulate her run to the last 16 here last season. World number 96 Rebeka Masarova is a player capable of much better tennis than her current deflated ranking suggests and she has the benefit of an impressive qualifying campaign in her legs for this first encounter with Raducanu. The Spaniard, however, has managed to win just one tour-level match this season to offer Raducanu a glimpse at a foothold in this tournament and the Brit will be backed to the hilt as a home-from-home favourite in the US, where she of course famously won her miracle Grand Slam title in 2021.
