THE PREDICTION

Former number 10 Emma Raducanu moved back up to 221st in the WTA world rankings after an impressive run to the quarter-finals of the Stuttgart Open last week, where she blasted past Linda Noskova and Angelique Kerber before a competitive exit to two-time defending champion Iga Swiatek. The 21-year-old is clearly hugely motivated by her return to form, and more importantly fitness, on clay over the last few weeks – with her brilliant displays at the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers securing Britain’s first away victory in France – but caution is advisable over the coming months in terms of accumulators. 24-year-old Maria Carle qualified well to make her debut here in Madrid and she brings a career-high of 82nd in from a recent Challenger title won on Spanish clay. Raducanu should be able to come through their first encounter in straight sets but take the outright option here as she plays on outdoor clay, at altitude, for the first time this season.

TIP: EMMA RADUCANU TO WIN
