World number 26 Qinwen Zheng overcame Diane Parry in three sets on Wednesday to back-up a double bagel opener over Sara Errani. The 20-year-old is performing reasonably well in her sophomore season after an incredible breakthrough on tour last year she has so far impressed most of all on clay, with a run to the round of 16 at Roland-Garros last summer seeing her take the only set from champion Iga Swiatek’s campaign. 22-year-old Emma Navarro is enjoying her own breakthrough season this year and she will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 52nd no matter the outcome here but she looks competitive after reaching the quarter-finals without dropping a set. The American finished runner-up to Olga Danilovic at the Bastad Challenger last week to bring some strong clay form into Palermo and Qinwen Zheng is currently more vulnerable than she should be on tour. A one-off on Navarro to earn at least a set is tempting but the sensible call is taking Zheng to edge through outright.
