22-year-old Emma Navarro stunned fourth seed Madison Keys in straight sets on Wednesday to maintain her excellent recent form and she will set a career-high WTA world ranking of around 43rd for her efforts. The American has been steadily rising up the rankings all summer but she first really came to the fore with her first top 10 win over Maria Sakkari last week in San Diego in a run that only just ended in three sets in the semi-finals to runner-up Sofia Kenin. Former world number 13 Leylah Fernandez is yet to drop a set this week after a solid result over Elise Mertens on Wednesday and she beat Navarro in two in their only previous meeting at Indian Wells back in March. The 21-year-old has put in some encouraging displays in recent weeks to suggest she could end 2023 strongly after a tough 2022 but Navarro’s momentum must not be underestimated here. Three sets seem likelier than two here so back in-form Navarro to earn at least one of them to leave the victor up to chance.
