THE PREDICTION
22-year-old Emma Navarro brought a career-high WTA world ranking of 31st into the Auckland Classic after ending last season in the form of her young life. The American played as much as she could over the off-season, winning ITF titles in Dallas and Charleston in November, to try and maintain the momentum from huge runs to the semi-finals of the San Diego 500 and the round of 16 at the Guadalajara Masters. That work looks to have paid off after a comeback victory over Linda Fruhvirtova on Tuesday got her 2024 underway with a big result and it will be fascinating to see what she can do over the next few weeks. World number 74 Elina Avanesyan also enjoyed her best season yet last year, reaching a career-high of 62nd, but her best work has come on clay so far. The 21-year-old beat wildcard Monique Barry in straight sets on Tuesday to get a foothold in the tournament but this first meeting with a hungry Navarro looks a steep test. Back Navarro to earn at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors.
