THE PREDICTION

This match looks a strong candidate for five sets between two rugged competitors. Former world number three Stan Wawrinka won three Grand Slam titles between 2014 and 2016 but Wimbledon has remained elusive from his almost-set, with his best runs back-to-back quarter-finals in 2014 and 2015. The 38-year-old is no threat to the title this fortnight in the twilight of his career but he is well capable of performing at a quality level for a round or two before fatigue sets in and world number 45 Emil Ruusuvuori takes a three-match losing streak into Wimbledon since a strong run to the semi-finals of the Libema Open on grass earlier this month. The 24-year-old has an excellent game for this surface, as proved by ousting Jannik Sinner in Rosmalen, but he can be outdone by intensity and a charismatic, well-loved veteran like Wawrinka is full of exactly that. Ruusuvuori beat Wawrinka in three sets at the Canada Masters last season but the Swiss is much improved here. Take both players to earn at least a set if you can or back Wawrinka to earn at least two to leave the victor up to chance.
