THE PREDICTION

World number 46 Emil Ruusuvuori has been performing well on tour in recent months despite some of his results suggesting otherwise. The Finn took a set from eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz at the Madrid Open and a recent win over Frances Tiafoe and two wins over Ugo Humbert are impressive on the surface. World number 58 Gregoire Barrere has been enjoying some of the form of his career in 2023, including an upset over Karen Khachanov at the Italian Open to reach the third round there. Both players would prefer to meet for the first time on their favoured hard surface but this looks wide open over fiver sets between two very capable winners. Home advantage should bolster Barrere’s resolve but Ruusuvuori has an excellent temperament for the longer format and this match looks a reasonable candidate for five sets. Otherwise, back Ruusuvuori to earn at least two sets to leave the victor up to chance.
