World number 43 Emil Ruusuvuori played well to oust in-form Ugo Humbert in three sets on Thursday to back up some excellent recent performances on clay. The 24-year-old upset Frances Tiafoe in three tight sets at the Barcelona Open late last month and he came very close to beating an out-of-sorts Carlos Alcaraz at the start of the Madrid Open two weeks ago after beating Humbert once again in the first. This looks too steep a challenge for the Finn but there is no better chance for him to beat world number three Daniil Medvedev than on a traditional clay court like Rome. 27-year-old Medvedev was upset by a resurgent Aslan Karatsev in the round of 16 at the Madrid Open last week and a straight-sets defeat to Holger Rune in Monte-Carlo suggests he is vulnerable to the better clay-courters on tour. Medvedev has been very vocal about his dislike for this surface but the Russian has won more matches than any other player this season. Back Medvedev to earn at least a set inside an accumulator but otherwise consider the same option for Ruusuvuori in a one off.
